Many companies are posting their 2009 Q4 reports and TiVo has recently reported a major loss of about $10.2 million. This financial blow is mainly due to the fact that most cable and satellite companies can provide a simpler, easier version of TiVo for a much lower price. This also allows the customers the option of using a product that is provided by the TV providers. This is really bad news for TiVo, especially since they recently released their latest Premiere units that will come with a new flash-driven interface.

However, this announcement is about the opening of their new Apps store. This is the world’s first HDTV-based application store. It allows those who have internet connected HDTVs to browse and select internet apps that they would like. This also helps the company from installing internet apps onto HDTVs that users will not use. Some of the apps that will be included at the store include The Associated Press, Netflix, Pandora, Twitter, USA Today, and Vudu. The store is looking to launch in March will begin with more than 20 apps. The company looks to expand that list to over 100 before the end of the year.

Once a week the hosts of HD Nation talks about the best in HD devices and HD content. This week they kick off the show with the announcement that TiVo is releasing a new upgraded set-top-box. However, even with the upgraded system, the hosts were disappointed with the new device. Some of the complaints included a stretched picture and the new flash interface is not compatible with the older TiVo systems. The hosts also discuss the new Harmony remotes from Logitech that were released last week. The remotes feature a screen display as well as the ability to control up to 5 devices, which is good or bad, depending on you’re A/V setup. Lastly, the hosts handle a viewer question that asks about the difference between 600Hz plasma and a 240Hz LCD refresh rate. The hosts state that the frame per second rate basically tells the user how many times an image is being flashed on the screen per second. The higher the rate, the smoother the image will look. Also the retail companies like to look at the big numbers and use them as a promotional point during the advertising. Because plasma and LCD technology is different, the difference in the frames per second is not a big concern. Also this specification is only really noticeable when you watch movies. Content like regular cable shows, video games, and sporting events are not really going to show a difference between the frame rates.

The problem though is that they will only come with two glasses per TV. However, Sony has also announced that they will also be releasing individual 3D glasses, the TDG-BR100 and TDG-BR50. The glasses come in three different colors and you have your choice between Blue, Pink, or Grey. The glasses use the active shutter technique and require an infrared emitter to use them. The bad news about them though is their price. Sony plans to sell both models for about $133 a pair. The IR emitter will only cost $55, but Sony’s 3DTV comes with one as part of the package. However, this means that if you buy one of the 3DTVs that don’t have glasses, and you are a family of four, then you can look to spend an extra $587 in order to see 3D at home.

The new series include the LX900, HX900, and HX800. These series includes 12 HDTVs in total and all of them will come with LED backlit technology and are the company’s first 3D Ready HDTVs. The TVs range in size from 40- to 60-inches, diagonally. The flagship series is the LX900 and it will come with Sony’s new “Intelligent People Sensor.” This feature allows the TV to tell when and where a viewer is sitting and be able to direct the sound directly towards them. Also, the feature can detect the lighting and environment conditions and adjust the image to look its best. All three series come with a Monolithic design and sits in the stand just like a scrabble tile on a rack. The LX900 TVs each come with two pairs of 3D glasses, but the company did not say if the same applies to the other series. Sony will release all the TVs in June, but the USA retail price was not released.
