RIKEN Developer Creates Cheap OLED Display Panel

Monday, August 31st, 2009

One of the major setbacks to developing OLED HDTVs is the cost to mass produce the display panel. However, the RIKEN center in Japan has announced that they have developed a new process to produce the displays. The new process used electrospray-deposited polymer films, which makes the display smoother and ensures superior future devices. Yutaka Yamagata of the RIKEN Center said, “We have discovered a range of conditions using a two-solvent method that can make extremely smooth thin films using electrospray deposition. Using this technology these devices could be manufactured as inexpensively as printing newspapers.” If this statement is true then there is a chance consumers will see big screen OLED HDTVs sooner than expected.

Monday, August 31st, 2009

15OLED_a2

You may have read about the new LG OLED HDTV that they have been developing. Recently, the company announced that they will be releasing the 15-inch OLED display next month. An Organic Light-Emitting Diode display (OLED) is comprised of self-glowing materials. These display panels are superior with better picture quality, they consume less power, and they are thinner than any LCD display. The only downside about OLED displays is that they are expensive to manufacture right now. LG’s display will feature a WXGA (1366 x 768) resolution and a 1000000:1 contrast ratio. The design is rather artistic, looking like a picture on a photo frame. The stand also tucks all the connections inside to enhance this illusion. LG has not yet released a retail price for this HDTV, but other reports guess it will probably retail for at least $2000.

3D HDTV is Coming Next Year

Friday, August 28th, 2009

3DHDTV_a1

In a week long advertisement, Panasonic has officially announced that starting next year they will be releasing their 3D HDTV plasma displays to the consumer market. This will mark the first time that 3D images have been displayed in pure HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. 3D images are created by displaying two images simultaneously, one for the left eye and one for the right. By wearing special glasses that allow each eye to see their respective image, the human brain creates the 3D image. Before movies where filmed in 1080p resolution, but because they had to film two images, the resolution was cut in half. The new 3D HDTV will not have this problem and each image will have the 1080p format. In order to prevent a format war, Panasonic plans to release their 3D standard to both the current HDMI 1.3 as well as the new HDMI 1.4 specification. Unfortunately like any new technology, Panasonic’s 3D HDTV will be a little pricy, but the company official stated that as demand increased and time progresses the technology will reduce to about the price of current HDTVs.

The owners of this home wanted to install an HDTV for their four children. The only problem is that they also needed a place to house their washer and dryer. So instead of building a second room, they did the quick and simple solution by combining the two rooms. The playroom now has a very high tech 65-inch plasma Panasonic TH-65PF10UK TV as well as a modern washer and dryer right next to them. To hide the devices, the family had wooden cabinets made that not only houses the washer and dryer, but also all the electrical components for the TV. The TH-65F10UK features full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, a 10000:1 contrast ratio, and a stylish black frame. The plasma screen was not their first choice; originally the family wanted a drop down projection screen and a home theater setting, but due to budget restrictions they went with the plasma. The room can easily be used for slumber parties and other play dates. And with the washer and dryer there, the parents can always have an excuse when they want to eves drop to see what their kids are up to.

NFL Rules HDTV can Stay Put for the Season

Anyone who is an NFL fan has probably heard about the controversy about the new Dallas Cowboy’s stadium and their 60 yards wide HDTV, which is the largest HD display in the world. The problem with this display is that it was recently hit by the Tennessee Titans’ punter during last week’s game. Because of this event, the NFL has been trying to figure out what should be done about the gigantic display. Today the NFL released a statement saying that any balls that hit any scoreboard, guide wire, camera, or any other electronic device shall be called a do-over and the time clock will be reset. The major problem that Cowboys’s owner, Jerry Jones is having is that the new rule is only in place for this season. The NFL rule committee is still deciding what they should do for future seasons; however, there is a strong possibility that Jerry will be forced to raise the display before the 2010 season starts. The main reason for the operation is because the 2010 season’s super bowl is expected to be in the new stadium. Jerry has been against the change since the event and even claims that the Titan’s kicker deliberately aimed for the HDTV by kicking down the field instead of kicking towards the sidelines.

Panasonic TX-P54Z1 HDTV Review

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

TX-P54Z1_a1

The Panasonic TX-P54Z1 HDTV is one of the several low cost displays that were recently released. This 54-inch plasma display features a 40000:1 contrast ratio and full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. Recently, Trusted Reviews got to see if the price drop also resulted in a drop in quality. The first thing the writer noticed was how inexpensive this display was. Only a few months ago a 46-inch model under the same series cost over $900 more than what the 54Z1 costs today. Another major feature the writer noticed was the incredible thickness of the HDTV. The P54Z1 measures only 1 inch thick with out the speakers, which is not widely seen with other plasma displays. The P54Z1 is paired with a wireless transmitter and receiver that it uses to transmit content from the source to the HDTV. This feature helps those who want to place the HDTV in a position away from the DVD player, game systems, and other electronics. Through out the review the writer was able to find an equal amount of point both towards and against the TV, but in the end, the writer’s verdict was, “Another day, another TV that’s got me feeling conflicted. Having finished my testing with a few Blu-ray discs, I’m still basking in the warm glow of the P54Z1’s truly exceptional HD movie performance. And yes, I’ve been at least a bit seduced by the extraordinarily skinny design and extremely effective WirelessHD technology.”
