Wireless HDMI Gets Legalized in UK

The UK has something to rejoice about today as it was officially announced that it is now legal to buy HDTVs that feature wireless HDMI connectivity. This wireless feature is good news for anyone who wants to mount their HDTV a distance away from their video and audio equipment and don’t want to worry about expensive and bulky HDMI cords. The actual date this feature becomes legal is July 17th, which is when the Ofcom will make the announcement. The only concern about this announcement is that not many companies will have wireless HDMI-ready HDTVs available. Panasonic, Sony, and LG Electronics have stated that they already have models ready for stores and plan to develop more products before Christmas and through 2010. Satellite and Digital TV magazine editor Alex Lane commented, “It’s great that Ofcom has moved so fast to clear the bandwidth for ultra wideband devices like wireless HDMI – and it shows regulators don’t have to be lumbering behemoths. This is great news for anyone with a wall-mounted TV or a projector at the other end of the room from their HD source – no need to run a 10 meter HDMI cable around your walls.”
