LG HDTVs Using VUDU Services In Action

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Earlier this week, LG announced that several of their new HDTVs will be getting integrated VUDU services and won’t require a media box. Today, the writers from Engadget got to view first hand how the LG TVs handle the VUDU services. They were pleased to see that everything you could do with the box was integrated into the TVs. The writer was also impressed on the speed that the TV was able to stream both 720p and 1080p content. They did realize though that while the 1080p content was slower, the 720p was more than enough to display a quality image and a reasonable streaming speed.

British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) is one of the leading cable TV services in the UK. Recently, the company has announced that sometime next year they will be releasing the world’s first 3D television station. The new station will be geared towards showcasing movies, and sports, which is expected to be the biggest draw for the station. The new station will be available to any current customer that has a Sky+ HD box, which is one of the company’s high quality media boxes. The only drawback to the new station is that it will still require customers to purchase 3D-ready glasses in order to watch. Otherwise the image will only look blurred. “3D is a genuinely ’seeing is believing’ experience [and] next year we will make our HD boxes work even harder for customers by launching Europe’s first 3D TV channel,” said Brian Sullivan, the managing director of Sky’s customer group. “[We are also] introducing a comprehensive video-on-demand service to complement Sky+ and the current Sky Anytime service.”

Philips 42PFL8404H/12 HDTV Review

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

42PFL8404H12_a1

The Philips 42PFL404H/12 HDTV is one of the company’s best models over in the UK. This 42 inch LCD display features full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and an 80000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Recently, the writers from Trusted Reviews got an up close look at the 42PFL404. The first aspect about the TV that the writer mentions is the design. From the front, the HDTV looks elegant and stylish. But if you turn the TV around, the thin appearance is shattered by a bulky box that sticks out. The TV delivers decent quality pictures with is better than many 42inch rivals. The colors were also noted as being enjoyably vivid and dynamic. Some of the problems that the 42PFL404 had included problems with the motion handling, brightness jumping, and problems with displaying crisp images from regular DVDs. The final verdict the writer made was, “The 42PFL8404 is a very attractive, heavily featured TV with an unusually approachable price by Philips’ premium standards. The fact that it doesn’t use the brand’s top-line video processing system is pretty obvious in some aspects of its picture quality, but even a Philips TV firing on three-quarters of the brand’s cylinders is still worth at least an audition.”
